Engineering Training & Qualifications:

Before undertaking any courses or qualifications, ensure the institution and the certification issued is recognised by either the MCA or US Coast Guard, depending on where you intend to work.

You will need to be STCW95 certified to be eligible for all Certificates of Competence.
The Certification of Competency that you can obtain are AEC; MEOL(Y); Y4; Y3; Y2 and Y1.
All engineering time must be logged on a vessel that is 24 meters in length, or greater.
Documented proof of sea time can be recorded by any one of the following:

  1. Merchant Navy Discharge Book (Seaman’s Book)
  2. Certificates of Discharge from ship
  3. Professional Yachtsmen’s Service Record Book
  4. MCA approved Seaman’s Discharge Book
  5. The above needs to be supported by signed testimonials from Owners, Masters, Chief Engineers or Management Companies.

Once you have decided that you wish to pursue a career in Engineering, you should apply to the MCA for a Letter of Initial Assessment before you enrol at an MCA approved training college.  This Letter will provide you with the training, education and sea service that will be required of you by the MCA to attain you first Certificate of Competence (CoC).

AEC – Approved Engine Course:

Requirements: 
You will need 1 month service having worked on board a yacht greater than 24 meters as anIt is possible to obtain an exemption from the MCA for the AEC if you are able to prove that you have certification in an applicable trade or prove relevant qualifications to the maritime industry.  These qualifications or certifications need to be included in your when you apply for your Letter of Original Assessment from the MCA (see above).

Hold a ENG1 Medical Certificate
18 years & older

After completing the AEC, you should be competent to undertake basic servicing schedules on marine engines and the course should provide you with a basic knowledge of engines.  This gives you the basic of combustion engines, focussing mainly on diesel engines.  Some schools will also teach you General Operational Procedures of a smaller vessel.

MEOL (Yacht) – Marine Engine Operator Licence:

Requirements:
STCW compliant (with Advanced Fire Fighting (STCW A-V1/3)
Hold an ENG1 Medical Certificate,
18 years & older,
You will need 36 months as a deck/engineer officer responsible for maintenance and servicing the yacht whilst holding an AEC certificate,
OR
24 Months as a yacht engineer responsible for maintenance and servicing the yacht whilst holding an AEC certificate.
OR
MEOL(Merchant Navy) with basic engineering skills training or an MCA approved formal engineering certification plus 18 months as a yacht engineer responsible for maintenance and servicing the yacht.
Pass the MCA oral examination.

Y4 Chief Engineer:

Requirements:STCW95 compliant (with Advanced Fire Fighting (STCW A-V1/3)
Hold an ENG1 Medical Certificate.
19 years or older.
Completion of the following MCA approved modules:
Skills Test
Operational Procedures & Basic Hotel Services
Auxiliary Equipment & Basic Ship Construction
Marine Diesel Engineering
42 months as a yacht engineer with at least 6 months of actual sea time
OR
36 months with at least 6 months sea time as a yacht engineer with an MEOL (Merchant Navy) or MCA approved formal training
OR
12 months sea time as a yacht engineer with a UK Engineering Apprenticeship that is approved by the MCA,
OR
12 months sea time as a yacht engineer with at least 6 months with an MEOL(Yacht)
OR
6 months sea time as a yacht engineer with a Merchant Navy Senior Marine Engine Operator License.
Pass the MCA oral examination

Y3 Chief Engineer:

Requirements:
9 months sea service including 3 months sea service with a Y4.
Completion of the following MCA approved modules:
Chief Engineer Statutory & Operational Requirement
Pass the MCA oral examination.

Y2 Chief Engineer:

Requirements
STCW95 compliant (with Advanced Fire Fighting STCW A-V1/3 and First aid STCW A-V1/4-1)
Hold and ENG1 medical certificate.
24 months sea time with at least 12 months holding a Y4
OR
15 months sea time with at least 9 months holding a Y3
OR
9 month sea time with at least 3 months holding a UK STCW95 Engineering Officer of the Watch Reg III/1 (or equivalent)
OR
6 months sea time holding a UK STCW95 Second Engineer Reg III/3 less than 3000kW (or equivalent).
Completion of the following MCA approved modules:
General Engineering Science I & II
Applied Marine Engineering
Advanced Hotel Services
Chief Engineer Statutory & Operational Requirement
Pass the MCA oral examination

Y1 Chief Engineer:

Requirements:
12 months sea time on a motor yacht between 500gt and 3000gt with not less than 3000kW and holding a Y2
OR
12 months sea time on a sailing yacht between 1000gt and 3000gt with not less than 1500kW and holding a Y2
OR
6 months sea time on a yacht between 500gt and 3000gt with not less than 3000kW and holding a UK STCW95 Second Engineer Reg III/2 unlimited.
Pass the MCA oral examination.
